New health-oriented features of the Apple smartwatches have always left people amazed. A jaw-dropping report appeared in the European Heart Journal about Apple smartwatch. The heart rate tracker in the device uncovered an 80-year-old woman’s underlying cardiovascular health issue. Surprisingly, professionals at a German hospital could not identify the medical condition.

What happened?

The woman had a pulmonary embolism for two years and symptoms of “typical angina”. Doctors performed a 12-channel ECG test but there was no evidence of ischaemia. It is a condition of restricted supply of blood to the tissues leading to the shortage of oxygen, as given in the reports. The patient made subsequent complains about ectopic beat episodes. She used the measurements recorded by the ECG function of Apple smartwatch.

It was then that the doctors decided to consider the further diagnosis. And as it turns out the ECG function of the watch actually diagnosed an issue that was missed by the actual ECG test performed by hospital’s equipment, therefore revealing an issue before it became potentially fatal. Later, the woman had her treatment for the same and left the hospital.

Apple watches can not only detect “atrioventricular-condition or atrial fibrillation” but also

“myocardial ischaemia”.

It is not the first time when an Apple watch has saved a life. Similar cases where the watch detects health related abnormalities have come up in the past as well. From being a fitness tracker, Apple watches have come a long way. They serve the function of health-oriented devices.

The next-gen of Apple watch

An upgraded ECG mechanism would effectively function at high rates. We get to see an enhanced processor, blood oxygen monitoring capabilities and amazing looks. Would write a dedicated article on that soon!
